Caption: St. Sebastian (crop) The color of the sky has changed several times. For this painting I started with a light graphite contour line over a yellow ground.I roughed in the shapes of the shadows in raw sienna and burnt sienna. Next, I applied a thin wash of the local colors. ie. blue sky, peach skin, etc.. Applying the flat " local" colors came after applying "Verdaccio" a greenish layer made of Mars black and yellow ochre referred to as the "Dead layer". I used black sparingly and when I did, it was mixed with another color. I wanted warm shadows so I made my shadow areas orange and red and some areas lavender (this connected the colors of the blue sky and the red orange shadows).
