This piece was drawn by my big brother and great friend Rags Morales. It's a beautifully rendered portrait of elongated man. The best of him I've ever seen.
I wanted to add color to it and so Rags suggested I make a print out of it from his website. That week I was teaching color to my students at The Joe Kubert school so I used this as an example.
I printed out the graphite contour line image on a cut down sheet of construction paper (8 1/2 x 11) I chose the closest color I have to a sienna. This redish brown was not bad. The purpose of a neutral colored ground was to set a midtone to the piece and allow me to work up the light and push back the darks (more like a painting). This was also a good choice since it was also a good mid tone for his flesh. I applied light amounts of color across the surface and worked up to darker colors in layers (more like water colors). Like Oil paints I applied the whites last I placed the whites in an easy to read convincing way (appearing to be in the optical lighting approach but more similar to the sculptural approach to light). Lastly I added white behind his face to emphasize the elegant contours of his profile. It is important to note that all my materials were bought at the dollar store including the pencil sharpener. I did this to demonstrate that while good quality products are always worth the money it is not a necessity for quality image making. As the content and it's even greater meaning should be of prime consideration. I drew this the other day and colored it today. I think I will do some adjustments but hey I am just learning to color on the computer. =P
