Rough pencil of Wolverine Tales of the Starlight Drive-in Tales of the Starlight Drive-in
Elsinore
This was done with acrylic washes over mat medium. The paper is a heavy weight card stock mounted on foam core. The original image was drawn in values on Bristol board. Tales of the Starlight Drive-in
This was a very rapid drawing done in ball point pen on 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper. There was no initial sketch and no graphite used. I enjoy working straight in ink on paper. You really have to focus when you can't erase. Tales of the Starlight Drive-in
This 10 page story was drawn in graphite and went straight to color. I knew I wanted the gunman to be sculptural so I left the image open. I wanted his image to explain something about the character for those who like to know more about a person than what the story provides so I gave him a cross around his neck and a marijuana belt buckle. I was thinking about those music videos that portray the singer surrounded by naked girls promoting and implying the use of drugs and alcohol, weapons and the desire for money all while wearing a cross on their neck. Terrible example for the youth and erroneous distortion of the ideology of the church. What Man can do to destroy what God has created.
Tales of the Starlight Drive-in
This page was done more like a film screen (long horizontal panels). The premise is that the young driver (gangster) is telling a joke to Jimmy the Whale. I wanted the images to support the dialogue and allow it to be the main visual element. I decided to make the panels just of the mouths focusing our attention on the joke and the response of Jimmy. I chose the amount of panels to coincide with the delivery. I gave Jimmy a fat burning cigar to show Jimmy as the mature elder boss in contrast to the young gun with a toothpick. Moving the cigar input an active element in a stagnant series of panels and also helped express the passing of time. Tales of the Starlight Drive-in
for this page I wanted everyone doing something with their hands. The stalker eats popcorn the gangster hands cash to the cashier and the cashier eats a donut. The script didn't call for the popcorn or the donut but I thought "If he's at a place to buy food then everyone there should be hungry." I wanted to emphasize his scale so I made him tower over the girl with a hand as big as her head. This helps later when he gets taken down by the skinny little guy eating popcorn. watch Jimmy's cigar move in a half circle from his right to his left. Both old dude's are so active and the kid doesn't move. Not even his toothpick. He couldn't care less what they are talking about.

The moment just before a kiss is the magic moment. The kiss is the release of energy.the caress of her hand on his chest and the embrace of her arm. Grace meets strength. This helps explain the psychological state of mind (which is the element that we most relate to as the viewer). Psylocke
